The shrill whistle of the school bell echoed through out the school itself and across the outside grounds. It was signaling that all students had to be inside the school in a few minutes, for in just ten school would start up. The sound died down and not many kids had moved from their spot outside, totally ignoring the bell altogether.
Jason hadn't heard the bell himself, though knew it had sounded as he climbed out of his black four door truck. He was a tad later to school than he had been in a while but that was only because of the traffic that grew when coming. All those adults going to work...pft, couldn't they wait and let the school kids get past first? That would help with some of the tardyness that seemed to pop up during the school hours. Seemed to always be blamed on the traffic whether or not it really was the case.
Tugging his navy blue hat on, Jason grabbed his backpack and slung it on his shoulder, strolling across the parking lot at quite the leisure pace. Being a Senior he knew the school well and all the shortcuts you could take to your class if you were late; even if most the short cuts were going through halls you were not allowed in. Except most the times he had not been caught and well, when he did he always had some story to get out of the punishment.
Jared a real sly guy when it came to things like that, mostly just because of his past he became like he is today. But we'll get into that later on. Rubbing the back of his neck, Jared hopped up the school steps and got inside without a problem, eying the many kids that hung around in this hall. Scoffing lightly, the young man pushed past a few girls that stared at him, each one muffling a squeal as if they had just one the lottery because he walked by.
"Hey Jimmy."
Dark hazel eyes flicked to the side as he greeted a boy about his age, lifting his hand in a wave for a brief moment in time before turning and continuing his walk to the soda machines. Glancing at his watch he noticed that school would start in exactly sixteen minutes.... They must have rung the bell a bit early today to get the kids inside. Not that they listened. But it did look like rain this morning...
Finally he made it to the machines and he quickly dropped his bag at his feet, pulling out his wallet from the back pocket of his light blue jeans. Nothing seemed good this early in the morning so he just picked some random coke and slipped the dollar inside. A few seconds later out popped the red can and he grabbed it. As the bell rang, Maddie looked over at the school from where she was standing with a group of her friends, but didn't make a move to go inside. Judging by her watch, she still had a while to go before her first class. So she turned back to her gang, only half of which had decided to come to school today. There were usually six of them, not including Maddie (the only girl of the group, and their unofficial 'leader' or sorts), but today there were only three. Jake, Micheal, and Robert. The others had probably gone to some club or bar, or more likely gathered at their hangout to drink and watch television.
They were a rag-tag group, to be sure; each one coming form some sort of troubled home or whatnot, but none of them looked it. In fact, they all looked (and acted, most of the time) just like everyone else. Well, not everyone else, but no one could tell they came from bad homes. Surprisingly, even with the amount of school they skipped, and homework they didn't do, they were all passing. With relatively good marks too. Micheal was the only one with less than seventy percent in any subject. Everyone else in their group almost always got straight A's. But you'd never be able to guess.
Even as the unofficial leader of the gang, Maddie was one of it's youngest members. Out of the three that were here, only Rob was her age; Micheal and Jake were both older than her by at least four months. Then there was Derrick and Josh - both older than her - and finally the youngest member of the group, just barely fifteen, Daniel. He was their wiz kid of sorts. By far the most intelligent of their group, and probably his whole year. He was the computer guy, for when they felt like hacking the school files and changing their grades, or classes, or spares, or marking them as present, when they were actually ditching school. There were a lot of things that a brilliant computer kid could do for a gang of people like theirs.
Maddie's hazel eyes regarded a group of cheerleaders nearby coldly; their pink skirts and pom-poms disgusted her. She couldn't imagine why anyone would want to wear a too-tight shirt, with a too-short skirt, dancing around and waving pom-poms and chanting stupid cheers for their team. The only way she would hate them more is if they had such enthusiasm for crap teams that always lost, but they weren't cheering for crap teams. Maddie was on all the important ones, and she was a natural athlete. Most of her gang were on the guys teams as well, so all in all, their school kicked ass at sports. But she still couldn't see the point of having scary-happy, stick-thin girls jumping around on the sidelines. If anything, they just distracted the players.
A quick glance at her watch brought her out of her thoughts as she realized that they only have about ten minutes to get to class. A decent amount of time, but she had been hoping to wander the halls for a bit before heading off to gym. Either that or hang out in the gym playing hoops with Jake and Rob, who were also in her gym class. So breaking up their conversation, she turned on her heel and started to walk towards the doors of the school, with them following beside her. Opening the doors, they walked down the hall for a bit before coming across the Science room, Micheal's first class. He veered to the left and entered the classroom, sitting down at his desk and leaning back in his chair. Maddie told Jake and Rob to meet her in the gym, and turned down a hallway, her hand digging around in her pocket for some change. She was thirsty, and one could never trust water fountains at high-schools.
As she walked down the hall she got a few looks from teachers, who obviously didn't like how she was wearing a hat indoors. Either that or they didn't like her hair, which she had recently dyed a sort of orange colour. It looked good on her, but old people never could understand teenagers. Today she was wearing cargo pants and a black t-shirt, with a hoodie over top. The hoodie had a skull on the front; another reason the teachers were giving her disapproving looks. But she didn't care. It's not like there was any rule against skulls, or orange hair. But anyways, she came across a vending machine and waited behind the boy who was getting a drink in front of her. His coke came out of the machine and he took it, then Maddie stepped up and looked at the selection. Putting her change into the machine she pressed the button for a coke as well; the only decent drink in the machine. When would they ever put good drinks into the vending machines? [/blockquote]

School. Pft, what could be worse? It was just something old people had thought of long ago to keep the young ones out of trouble. It was something that really had no meaning what-so-ever. They hadn't needed it thousands of years ago when ever one grew up and got a job...so why need it now? You could get a job at the early age of sixteen, so why worry about finishing high school if you could get a job anyways? Questions like that always bugged Jared but his mother was what kept him going.
Jason's mother didn't have the greatest past in all the world. He was just trying to do what she could not and by finishing high school and going to college, he would be living her dream. That was all he really wanted. Though his grades weren't the best; they were still passing material.
Snapping open the coke Jared stepped to the side to get out of a girl's way. The first thing that caught his eye was her hair underneath her cap. Not many had orange hair around this school. He ran a hand through his dark brunette hair, pushing his hat off and slipping it inside his jacket. He was getting a few glances from a couple teachers that were chatting near the office and he knew they weren't too fond of hats being worn on the school grounds. He wasn't one to get his things taken away so either, especially not the hat he was wearing today.
Now where was his bag? He had dropped it....ah crap the girl was standing over it. Shoving a hand in his pocket he stepped up slightly to her side. "Excuse me..." he said simply, getting her attention without touching her or bending down to grab his bag. He sure didn't want a foot in his face if she decided to take him grabbing his bag the wrong way. "Could you hand me that backpack?"

As the can fell from the machine into her waiting hand, Maddie looked over as she heard a voice. It seemed the boy had left his backpack on the ground, and she was now standing over it. She was, frankly, surprised he hadn't just grabbed it. Most people around here would just push someone out of the way if they were in their way, but not this guy. She picked up his bag and handed it to him with her free hand, opening her pop with the other. She had pretty much perfected the art of opening pop cans with only one hand, mostly because the other hand was nearly always busy holding or doing something. She was a very active person; not one to just stand around doing nothing.
As she waited for him to take his bag, she looked him over; something she did often when meeting new people. She was a very observant person, although most people wouldn't realize it, and she never forgot a face. Especially one like his. He looked sort of a mix between a pretty boy and a jock, but then again, that was only her perspective. She tried not to immediately put people into categories when she met them, but first impressions really were very important when it came to her. So far, his had been good. And she never was one to turn down the opportunity for a new 'friend'.
"What's your name?"

Good. He hadn't gotten a foot in the face or a sharp word for bothering her. That was always a good thing to him, other wise he would be thrown into a bad mood for probably the rest of the day. This girl seemed to be one of a kind, that was for sure and he liked that. She defiantly didn't look like one of those prissy cheerleaders, anyways. He had already dubbed himself "allergic" to them.
"Jared."
Grabbing his bag from her he nodded slightly after saying his name. "Yours?" Placing the bag over his shoulder he stood there, glancing her over as well. A new person to meet wasn't always so bad. Though at this time they would have to rush in greetings for the second school started was the second the swarm of kids ran. The halls would be squished together with people getting to classes and it was always best to start walking a minute before the bell rang; that way you would be in front of the "army" for a while until they all came rushing past.
Raising a brow he motioned to her. "Don't you play a few sports for the school?" He didn't not like sports, and he had played basketball during his first year here. But after he hit Junior and Senior he quit everything. He just wanted to focus on school, get it over with, and then get outta dodge. Sports could wait. School had to be finished.

Maddie took a drink from her coke, looking at her watch as she did so. It seemed she wouldn't have enough time to change and play some basketball before class started, but she did have enough time to have what could turn out to be a conversation with this boy, however rushed it may be. She didn't care so much about the rush after the second bell, because she could easily push her way through it or, just as easily, outrun it. But she wouldn't have to anyways, because the gym was close - just down the next hall - and her change of clothes was kept in a locker in the change rooms. So she didn't have to stop by her own locker or take any detours on her way to class. Besides, she was Mr. Jamesone's best student. He wouldn't mind if she was a bit late.
She was brought from her thoughts when he told her his name, and asked for hers in return. He took his bag back, and with her now-free hand, she held it out to shake. It was strange to some people that she always shook hands when she first met someone, but it was just something that she had always done; regardless of how odd it may seem. Besides, growing up in such a bad neighborhood made her want atleast one thing in her life that made things seem a bit more.. normal, and shaking hands with people usually was enough to negate the effects of any bad thing she may or may not do to them/with them/for them over the course of their relationship.
"I'm Maddie."
Soon after she replied, he asked her if she played sports for the school. She smiled lightly and nodded. "Yeah, basketball's my main one though. What about you? You look like a jock; can you live up to your stereotype?" The last part was obviously joking; as much as she didn't like putting people into groups upon first meeting them, it was so much fun to see how they reacted. Besides, a first impression of Maddie was never completed until someone either laughed, or ran away crying. [/blockquote]
