Pepper hurried to her locker as the assorted Freshmen around her scattered to their classes. She cursed quietly when she looked at the clock and saw she was going to be at least five minutes late to her first class. She pawed for the lock on her locker and quickly spun the dial in the middle until her combination was complete. Not waiting to hear the click of the lock, she grasped the handle and pulled back with all her might, attempting to wrench it open. "Ow!" She yelped. Her arm snapped back and her locker remained shut as she flew back a foot and landed on her rear. "Stupid Sully," she murmured, recalling when she had affectionately named her locker on the first day of high school. She jumped up, looked around to se eif anyone saw her fall, and dusted off her pants. She growled something incoherent as she entered the combination again and tried to jiggle the locker open. It still wouldn't open. Pepper's eyes narrowed and she slammed her fist against it, causing more pain to come to her already smarting hand. "Open!" She wailed softly, banging her head against the front of it.

Sighing softly as she put her books on the wooden shelf she had put in her locker on the first day of school Samantha wiped tears from her eyes as she grabbed her history book and notebook. How could she think of being happy right now? Her little brother was laying unconcious in a hospital bed in the children's unit in the local hospital...And people expected her to only concentrate on basketball, to be the leader for the Junior Varsity team and lead them to success..
When a girl a few feet away from her on the other side of the hall yelled she jumped and as she dropped all of her books she inhaled deeply, starting to shiver as she bent down to gather her dropped items. When she turned her head to look at the girl who had scared her moments earlier she saw that she had fallen. Closing her locker slowly she picked up a piece of paper, the girl's schedule, that had fluttered away from her when she fell and walked over to her slowly as the bell rang, announcing them both late for class.
By the time Samantha had reached the girl's side she was still shaking rather badly, but the girl had gotten up and seemed to be having pretty bad luck with getting her locker open. When the girl told her locker to open and banged her head on it Samantha couldn't help but raise her eyebrows..Was this kid okay?
"I..um...you..you dropped your schedule.." said Samantha, holding her hand out shakily for the other freshman to take her schedule. Glancing at the girl's schedule she smiled and said softly, "..We're both going to History...Wanna walk together...Er..If you can get your locker opnen?"

Pepper's head whirled around and her hair smacked her in the face. Wincing and inhaling sharply, she smiled widely. "Uhm, thanks," she said meekly, laughing breathily and grasping the paper. "I'm trying to get Sully--Uh, I mean my locker open before..." She trailed off as she saw the girl's face was wet and her eyes were red and puffy. Pepper's smile faded and she lifted a hand to reach out again before shaking her head and swiftly bringing it back down. "Are you okay?" She whispered even though no one was around to hear them. Her other hand drifted to the locker and it rested against the cool metal surface as Pepper slightly crumpled her schedule in anticipation.

Hardly hearing anything that the girl said at first Samantha's mind trailed off. She was once again sitting on her front porch with her older sister Leigh, who was a Sophomore. They were doing their homework together like they always used to when they were younger. While the two were quizzing eachother on Spanish words the squealing of brakes had made both of the girls head snap in the direction the sound had come from and left them staring at the horrible scene..Of blood splashed against the warm sun baked sidewalk..Their little brother's blood..While his puppy that he had been walking was fine, shivering next to their brother's unconcious body. And as the drunken man stumbled from his car and began cursing Leigh had made Samantha go inside and call the ambulence while she went over to see how badly their little brother had been injured..It had been a rough day..It had also been yesterday.
When the girl she had been talking to asked if she was okay her mind snapped back to the present time and she stood shaking, grasping a locker to keep from falling. "I..I'm just having some family problems." said Samantha her voice quivering almost as bad as she was shaking, in a soft whisper that she could hardly hear herself. She wasn't sure if her fellow Freshman had heard her, so she looked up at the girl's face questioningly, wondering if she had heard her at all.

Pepper wondered what the girl had said. She'd only caught a small whisper that reminded her of a whimper. Taking another step forward, Pepper cocked her head to the side. "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that," Pepper said while shaking her head apologetically. "You don't have to repeat yourself though." She shoved her schedule into her pocket and clasped her hands together in front of her. "Do you need to go to the nurse? I'll walk you there." She smiled at the shaking girl in front of her, "I still need a pass for being late anyway, and you look like you need to lie down. I can get your work for you since we're in the same class..." She trailed off, looking at her feet.

"I guess I'm just having a pretty bad day." said Samantha running her fingers through her dark brown curls that were now slightly mussed since she had been running around the track all morning for basketball conditioning. Pulling a royal blue ribbon out of her pocket she tied her curls back, tying the ribbon in a seemingly perfect bow at the back of her head. Curls formed around her face as she did so.
Thinking for a moment Samantha shook her head,"I honestly don't think the nurse could help.." She spoke the truth..Could nurses fix emotionaly pains? On all the television shows there were the sweet little nurses who would help the handsom young men with their injuries and they'd fall in love..But anyone with half a brain knew that rarely ever happened. Nurses made you feel better most of the time, they didn't help you emotionally though.
"Um...How about we both just get a note and try to get to class before the class is...Over?"

Pepper glanced at the other female from the corner of her eye slyly. "Or.. We could skip it all together?" Turning to face her fully, her hands clasped together in front of her. "By the time we get there, it'll be half over anyway. Let's just walk around.. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to walk into a class with tears on my cheeks," Pepper murmured not unkindly. She truly didn't want to see this young woman get hurt; she seemed kind and whatever had her down made Pepper angry. "Maybe we could go outside if you're feeling up to skipping class. Fresh air might do you good," she told her, unaware that she'd already been out that morning.

Might as well..I wouldn't be able to concentrate today anyways..They'd just think I was still out running the track, no one would need to know that I was actually skipping on purpose for a change.......And geeeezzz...she's right about the tear thing..but did she really have to say it?
"Okay..I guess some fresh air could do me some good." said Samantha lightly, even though she would rather never go outside again after this morning.

Pepper shrugged. "I don't really mind where we go. I just don't like this school." She frowned as she glanced at the walls. "It feels...constricting." Clearing her throat, she hopped a little to the left and slammed her fist on her locker. Trying the combination again, it finally opened. She rejoiced by doing a small dance before shoving a paper into the small space and shutting the door swiftly. "Where to?" She questioned, waiting for the girl to begin walking. Or talking. Maybe even both.. I may not be able to help, but I'd like to know what's bothering her... she thought.
